Nougat and Chocolate Museum

The Nougat and Chocolate Museum, located next to the factory and the store, is a cultural space where you can learn about the history of Nougat and Chocolate from Agramunt as well as the history of the Torrons Vicens company. The Museum is the perfect space to understand and publicize the origins of this secular tradition, the evolution of work and the trajectory of the Agramuntina population that, without a doubt, has been marked by this sweet.

The nougat tradition of Agramunt appears documented for the first time in 1741, through letters from the noble families of the town. The visit is a journey back in time. A journey full of sensations and experiences with which, through images, audiovisuals and an infinity of utensils and old machinery, we will learn the secrets of the artisan elaboration of Nougat as the Vicens family began to manufacture it. There we will find a reconstruction of the nougat workshop that the family used in 1933.

From the 17th to the 21st century

The historical archives of Agramunt do not preserve documents prior to this date. I is that as this is not a full-time trade but a complement to the main activity, which could sometimes be a farmer, other confectioner, or any other trade, it was never recorded in the notarial documents. The different wars and looting to which the Villa de Agramunt was subjected may also have led to the disappearance of the few documents, written testimonies of said activity, which, if they existed, were either damaged or lost.

In any case, from the few documents that testify which were the different trades existing at that time, we can conclude that the nougat trade in 1741 was the most numerous of the trades with seven nougat makers in the town. In the 18th century, nougat activity was already a tradition in Agramunt. But it was not until the 19th century and during the first decades of the 20th century that Agramunt's nougat acquired recognition due, in large part, to the external projection that artisans achieved by visiting fairs and markets in other towns. One of the most important took place in Barcelona and at Christmas.

The Civil War (1936 - 1939) paralyzed the activity and in the post-war period there were problems of supply of raw materials such as hazelnuts. After that period, only some families, such as Vicens, continued the centuries-old tradition. At the same time, around 1830, the first pastry artisans began to make chocolates in Agramunt, a luxury product for the time.

Learn about the history of nougat and chocolate

At the beginning of the 20th century it was industrializing and in 1936 three types of chocolate were already manufactured: stone chocolate, vanilla chocolate and milk chocolate. But the Chocolate “a la pedra” would be the one that would be recognized as a specialty of the area.

Faithful to these traditions, a history has been forged, always respectful of its legacy, but adapting it to the modernity of our days. With each piece of our work we invite you to live the passion of a legendary land and the magic of an exclusive product to make you feel an unforgettable moment.
